Music is a universal language that people from all walks of life and from all ethnicities understand. Perhaps the main reason for this is not the beats as we have been assuming, but it could be that music has a healing effect on our minds and souls. When we listen to music, we can never be the same again. If you are unwell, if you are sad, if you need healing of the spirit, listen to music. It will uplift you and make you feel better about yourself. When you feel better about yourself, you heal faster.
I come from a musical family, singing country music and folk. This is why I have a fully equipped home studio where I make my music. In the course of my music work, I have done some research into the incredible benefits of listening to music.
Here are many ways in which music can help you:
Music can lessen pain
Chronic pain, chronic fatigue and insomnia can all be lessened by listening to music. Researchers have looked into this in various studies and they have established that indeed, music helps to alleviate pain and suffering. It is also useful for lifting the mood when one is under depression.
The release of feel-good hormones
That is right, when you listen to music, your brain signals your system to release feel-good hormones like dopamine, same as when you have sex. This is why you feel so happy and uplifted when you listen to music. There is no way that you can listen to music and stay the same.
You will be able to keep more of an open mind
When you listen to music, you can be better able to keep an open mind. Music lovers listen to all kinds of music, good and bad. This acceptance of good and bad is what makes them so open-minded. When you listen to good or bad music, you will eventually be able to identify people who are happy and those that are sad.
Music gives us a good balance for emotions
Unlike when people look for things that make them feel happy when they feel sad, when it comes to listening to music, when we feel sad, the kind of music that comes to mind is the sad music.
When we feel happy, we remember happy music only and that is what we want to listen to. It can be hard to wrap one’s head around this, but it is true. The good thing is that when we are sad and we listen to sad music, it is as if the two negatives cancel each other because we end up feeling happy.
Get started to listening to music
When you are having trouble sleeping, try listening to soothing music that has been carefully selected for just that. This could be soft instrumental music. Set it in the background and feel the drowsiness crawl over your eyes.
There is music for everything – when you are hiking, when you are jogging, when you eating … there is music for every occasion too. Even when you are working, you can have music playing in the background, makes you pick up the pace faster.
Whatever you do, just get listening. And singing along where you can.
